WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT EV CHARGING TIMES?

FOLLOW US

Anyone who has used a smartwatch, wireless headphones or a cell phone with a rechargeable battery knows about how long the charge lasts. But do they know how long it takes to charge the battery? It’s the same with electric vehicles. It’s easy to concentrate on range but not think about charging time. So, how long does it take to charge an EV?

The simple answer? It depends on certain factors: the condition of the EV battery, the type and output of the charger, battery temperature, and more. Take a look below at the different types of chargers and where you might encounter them.

EV CHARGING AT HOME

Level 2 chargers use 208–240-volt service and are typically located at a properly equipped home, in some workplaces and certain public spaces, like parking garages and in shopping centers. They can easily charge your electric vehicle overnight, so you can wake up to a full charge,* depending on the model, trim and charging equipment.

GMC EV drivers can plug into fast Level 2 home charging with the GM PowerUp 2 and even faster home charging with the GM Energy PowerShift Charger, which also can turn certain properly equipped GM EVs into a source of backup power during a blackout — when your home is properly equipped.*

EV CHARGING ON THE GO

DC Fast Chargers* are designed to be the quickest EV charging option. They use 400–1,000-volt DC service to charge compatible electric vehicles while you are away from home. You will see these charging stations at rest stops, grocery stores and even select gas stations. To help you charge more efficiently, bring your battery to the optimal temperature prior to DC Fast Charging. The myGMC mobile app* will automatically precondition your battery when you select a DC Fast Charger as your destination. Simply precondition your battery approximately 30 minutes* before you begin charging, especially in extreme temperatures, to get the most out of every charge.

GMC EV drivers have access to over 250,000 public chargers in the U.S, and Canada, including more than 20,000 Tesla* Superchargers. Simply use the myGMC* app to activate your access to a network of Tesla Supercharger locations across North America and order a GM-approved NACS DC adapter.
